We’ve had to put our Whole30 on hold (fancy way of saying “We quit.”) We want to start again in February. I hope we can – after only three days (we started late) I am feeling so much better. I ate sugar (apple pie) last night at our church dinner, and I woke up with a major headache.
Why did we quite? A couple of reasons, all of them about money. Specifically, we had a couple of expenses pop up this week that are big, that require either breaking out our credit card or slashing some budget categories and battening the hatches until February. Since we are working towards being debt free by June 2018, and since we believe that we should not ever go into debt again except for a few very specific reasons (mortgage, business) we chose the latter option.
Our grocery budget is one area that got slashed. Why? Well, we have half of a hog sitting in our freezer, 15 lbs. of flour, 5 lbs of beans, and roughly 5 lbs of rice sitting in our pantry. We have 3 quarts of yogurt, 10 quarts of applesauce, turnips, beets, green beans, collards, butternut squash, etc. sitting in our refrigerator and freezer. We are not about to go hungry if we eat frugally for the remainder of the month. The grocery budget got reduced from $330 to $250. I will buy canned and frozen veggies, a gallon of milk, and whatever meats are on markdown or at a really good sale price this month. I’ve noted that our Kroger has ground beef for $1.99/lb, chicken thighs for $0.99/lb, and chuck roast for $5.99/lb.
So instead of weekly updates on our Whole 30 progress, I’ll post updates on how we are staying in that tiny budget. If you are doing Whole 30 this month (I know some of you are) I hope that you stay strong, stick with it, and enjoy all of the health benefits come January 31st!
